DIY Spice Rack

Those who love cooking know it’s essential to have a variety of spices at their fingertips, and this fun, DIY Spice Rack project will give you a stylish place to keep them all. Follow these simple, step-by-step instructions to create a rack that will hold a wide selection of spice bottles. Plus, this project allows you to customize the look and design to match your kitchen’s pre-existing aesthetic.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time:
  1. Step 1 Measure and Cut your Lumber

A person measures some lumber with a tape measure.
A person cuts some lumber on a mitre saw.

For this project, you will need three pine boards that measure 1” x 4” x 8’. First, we will take these boards to measure out the pieces that make up the spice rack. You will need to cut out four pieces at 12 inches, four pieces at 17 inches, and four pieces at 4 inches. These will be used as slats that fit within each other and the end pieces.

To formulate these pieces, make straight cuts along the marked areas.

  2. Step 2 Create the Notches

A person uses a jigsaw to cut out a section of the spice rack lumber.
A person notches out some wood using a hammer and chisel.

To create the spice rack, you must add notches within the cut boards that will fit within each other. For the four 12-inch boards, you will want to make two 1-inch cuts 3 inches from each end of the board. To do this, use a jigsaw. First clamp your board onto a work table. Using the jigsaw, make a straight cut along the marked 1-inch area halfway through the board.

Once there are cuts on either end, you can use a chisel and hammer to cut out the notch. Next, use sandpaper to sand down any harsh edges.

Using this same technique, cut three notches within the 17-inch boards. Do not create any notches in your 4-inch boards.

  3. Step 3 Stain or Paint your Wood Boards

A person applies stain to the spice rack with a brush.
A person wipes off the excess stain with a rag.

When adding a stain or painting your wood boards, lay out a drop cloth or garbage bag and make sure to use plastic gloves to avoid any mess. Do this in a well-ventilated area, using a brush to apply a layer of stain or paint over the boards.

If staining your spice rack, grab a rag or cloth and wipe away any excess stain for a smooth application. You might need two layers to achieve the desired colour and coverage. Allow the stain or paint to dry for a few hours before continuing with this project.

  4. Step 4 Assemble your DIY Spice Rack

A person applies wood glue to the spice rack.

Place your boards on a table and connect them using the notches to create the final product. Before setting these in place, add some wood glue in the notches to create a sturdy spice rack. Allow for the glue to dry before moving the spice rack.

  5. Step 5 Nail the End Pieces

A person uses a brad nailer to fasten the wood on the spice rack together.

Take your 4-inch boards and close off the ends on the spice rack. Lay them in place and add nails to the board to create a secure end cap. Once all four sides are finished, your spice rack is complete and ready to be used!
