How to Clean a Front-Load Washing Machine

Wipe the washer gasket down using a spray-cleaning solution. Bleach-based solutions work well to control and remove mildew, as do vinegar-based solutions. Never mix bleach and vinegar together, however, as they release dangerous toxic fumes when combined.

Spray the mildew cleaner and wipe the gasket clean, making sure to get into all of the hard to reach areas. You can even use a toothbrush to get into the really tricky areas. Once you’ve cleaned the gasket, wipe it dry with a microfibre cloth.

Remove the detergent dispenser drawer and clean it well with a multi-purpose cleaner, or a vinegar and baking soda solution. Once clean and dry, place it back into the washer. This will help remove any build-up that can accumulate in the drawer.

There are many great ways to clean the drum of your washing machine. You can use a washing machine cleaner tablet for a quick fix, or use a vinegar-based solution, adding vinegar to the dispenser and baking soda to the washer and then simply running a long load on hot temperature setting.

You can also use bleach as an alternative cleaning method. Simply add it to the dispenser and run a full long cycle with cold or warm water, then, once complete, run a second load with just water to flush out any remaining bleach before putting clothes back into the washer.        

Keep the exterior of the machine clean as well. While a load is running, simply wipe down the exterior of the machine with a microfibre cloth and a multi-purpose cleaner. When your load is complete, wipe the door and gasket dry with a clean cloth.

Keeping your washer smelling fresh is easy, as long as you follow a few simple tips. Wipe down the door and gasket with a dry cloth after each load to prevent build-up and mould. Clean your detergent dispenser regularly. Leave the door open after you’ve finished a load to allow the machine to air out. Mould and bad odours can develop if the machine is not allowed to dry between uses. Finally, never let wet clothes sit in the machine. By following these steps, you’ll keep your machine smelling fresh and clean for years to come.
