Give yourself some extra gift-wrapping space by building this helpful and trendy gift-wrapping station. With a simple picture frame as a base, we’ll show you how to sand it, paint it and add some accessories to create an efficient and great-looking wrapping space.

To make a DIY gift-wrapping station, first you need to find a wooden picture frame. It can be one you have laying around or you can source one from a local Home Depot store. Sand the picture frame with a sanding sponge or sandpaper to remove any existing paint and smooth the entire surface. Wipe it down with a tack cloth to remove any dust or debris and to make sure the paint adheres nicely.
Always remember to spray paint in a well-ventilated area like a garage or yard and be sure to cover any surfaces you don’t want to get paint on with a drop cloth. Using some Rust-Oleum Universal Matte spray paint, shake the can vigorously for about a minute, then, using even, overlapping strokes, apply a first coat to your frame. Let it dry according to the recommendations on the can and then add 1-2 more coats to ensure that your frame is completely covered.
Apply some Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover 2X Clear – Matte spray paint once the base layers have dried to help protect your paint from everyday wear and tear. Hold the can 10-16 inches away from the frame and apply 2-3 light coats a few minutes apart, then let it dry for 24 hours.
Using sandpaper or a sanding sponge, lightly sand your dowel rods until smooth to ensure that the paint adheres to the rods for even coverage. Wipe them with a tack cloth to remove any dust. Spray paint each dowel rod with Rust-Oleum Universal Metallic spray paint the same way you did with the frame. Apply 2-3 light, even coats on one side of each rod, let it dry and then repeat on the opposite side. Repeat this step on your tube straps.
Now that the dowel rods and tube straps have dried for about 30 minutes, spray them with 2-3 light coats of Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover 2X Clear – Matte spray paint. Use the same technique you used in Step 4 to topcoat the frame. This will protect the metallic paint from rubbing off. Set everything aside for 24 hours to dry completely.
Once all the paint is completely dry, attach the tube straps to the frame using the included nails and a hammer. Make sure you space out the straps evenly so that there is enough room for the rolls of wrapping paper. Also be sure to line them up so they’re the same height on each side of the picture frame.
Using picture-hanging hardware, hang your frame from the wall at a height that is comfortable to reach, specifically the top dowel rod. Slide your rolls of wrapping paper and ribbon spools onto the rods, and then put your rods into their tube straps so the rolls can’t slip off. For additional storage you can add a small cabinet with drawers for tape, scissors and more! You’ve now finished your DIY wrapping station!
