DIY Wooden Headboard

  1. Step 1 Measure and Cut the Wood

Person cutting wood with a mitre saw.

To begin making your DIY headboard, start by cutting your lumber based on the dimensions in this cut list. The scrap pieces will be used to support the frame of your headboard during installation.

    Three 2" x 4" x 8’ whitewood:

    • Two 55" legs
    • One 68" top trim
    • Leave four scrap pieces

    Three 1" x 4" x 8’ whitewood:

    • Two 60" supports
    • Three 27" uprights
    • Leave 2 scrap pieces

    Four 1" x 2" x 8’ strip boards:

    • Three 60" finishing trims
    • Two 31" finishing trim
  2. Step 2 Create the Pocket Holes

    Man using pocket hole jig.

After cutting your lumber pieces, use a pocket-hole jig to create pocket holes in them. Drilling the holes at an angle will hide the screws used to connect the pieces together.

    On the 27” uprights:

    • Two pocket holes on both ends

    On the 60” top support:

    • One pocket hole at 15”, 30”, 45”
    • Two pocket holes at both ends

    Left & right legs

    • One pocket hole on top trim
  3. Step 3 Create the Centre Assembly

A person drills a pocket hole screw into wood.

Arrange your top pieces into a rectangular shape with the smaller pieces on the inside of the longer top and bottom pieces. With one vertical piece on each end, the third vertical piece should be about 30 inches into the centre.

Secure the pieces together with wood glue and 1 ¼-inch wood screws.

  4. Step 4 Create the Inset for the Frame

A person lines up the wood before screwing it together.
A person uses a clamp to hold the wood in place while they screw in a wood screw.

Next, create the inset for your frame by aligning your side boards and using a few pieces of scrap lumber to get the appropriate height. The faces should be flush.

Clamp everything to hold the shape and secure with wood glue and 1 ¼-inch wood screws.

  5. Step 5 Attach the Top Trim

A person attached the top trim to the headboard.
A person uses a clamp to hold the wood in place while they screw in a pocket hole screw.

Centre the top piece so that the overhang is ½-inch on both sides and 2 inches in the front. Use scrap lumber to keep it at the proper height and then secure it with wood glue and 1 1/4 -inch wood screws.

  6. Step 6 Attach the Bottom Trim

A person attaches the bottom trim to the headboard with a brad nailer.

Place the bottom trim piece and ensure that it’s flush with the back. Use 1 ½-inch brad nails and wood glue to secure it.

  7. Step 7 Create the Chevron Pattern

A person draws a pencil line down the centre of the centre post to guide the chevron installation.
The chevrons are applied to the headboard.

Measure a straight, vertical line down the centre of the centre board. The chevron pattern will follow this line to keep it symmetrical. Follow the dimensions of the cut list to create the design.

Ensuring all of your cuts are done at a 45-degree angle, place the chevrons from the bottom to the top and use glue and brad nails to secure them.

  8. Step 8 Attach the Finishing Trims

A person attached the finishing boards to the chevron pattern on their headboard.

Attach the finishing trim around the inside of the frame, on top of the chevrons. This will complete the look and give it a clean, beautiful aesthetic.

  9. Step 9 Sand and Finish the Wood

Stain is applied to the finished headboard.

Sand the whole headboard and wipe away any excess sawdust with a tack cloth. Apply paint or stain in whichever colour or finish you desire. Once dry, you’ve got a brand new headboard that’s sure to make your bedroom look spectacular!
