Creating a DIY headboard is an easy way to customize your bedroom and really make it unique. We’ll show you how to make a headboard, from the cut list to assembly to sanding and staining, so you can create your very own, one-of-a-kind DIY headboard.
There are 9 steps to completing this project:
To begin making your DIY headboard, start by cutting your lumber based on the dimensions in this cut list. The scrap pieces will be used to support the frame of your headboard during installation.
Three 2" x 4" x 8’ whitewood:

After cutting your lumber pieces, use a pocket-hole jig to create pocket holes in them. Drilling the holes at an angle will hide the screws used to connect the pieces together.

Arrange your top pieces into a rectangular shape with the smaller pieces on the inside of the longer top and bottom pieces. With one vertical piece on each end, the third vertical piece should be about 30 inches into the centre.
Secure the pieces together with wood glue and 1 ¼-inch wood screws.
Next, create the inset for your frame by aligning your side boards and using a few pieces of scrap lumber to get the appropriate height. The faces should be flush.
Clamp everything to hold the shape and secure with wood glue and 1 ¼-inch wood screws.
Centre the top piece so that the overhang is ½-inch on both sides and 2 inches in the front. Use scrap lumber to keep it at the proper height and then secure it with wood glue and 1 1/4 -inch wood screws.
Place the bottom trim piece and ensure that it’s flush with the back. Use 1 ½-inch brad nails and wood glue to secure it.
Measure a straight, vertical line down the centre of the centre board. The chevron pattern will follow this line to keep it symmetrical. Follow the dimensions of the cut list to create the design.
Ensuring all of your cuts are done at a 45-degree angle, place the chevrons from the bottom to the top and use glue and brad nails to secure them.
Attach the finishing trim around the inside of the frame, on top of the chevrons. This will complete the look and give it a clean, beautiful aesthetic.
Sand the whole headboard and wipe away any excess sawdust with a tack cloth. Apply paint or stain in whichever colour or finish you desire. Once dry, you’ve got a brand new headboard that’s sure to make your bedroom look spectacular!
