How to Make a House Number Planter

Lorem

Create a beautiful house number sign that doubles as a planter to add curb appeal and style to the front of your home. It’s a great project for beginners and pros alike, and we’ll show you how to build it using simple tools, lumber and some paint.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time:
  1. Step 1 Cut your Sign to Size

    Cut your Sign to Size

Using plywood or any other type of wood you like, cut the back of your sign to size. Remember, your planter box must fit in the bottom, so be sure to account for that extra size. You’ll need room for both your planter box and the house numbers and some space between.

  2. Step 2 Assemble your Planter Box

    Assemble your Planter Box

Assemble the planter box using screws and wood glue. Be sure to make even cuts for the sides and then one longer cut for the front face. Attach them with brad nails and wood glue to keep them in place. Be sure to drill a few drainage holes in the bottom of your planter box so water doesn’t build up.

Flip the planter over so the open back is facing upward and then place your sign board flush with it. Attach the two with brad nails and wood glue. Flip it over and you should now have a sign board with a planter box on the bottom.

  3. Step 3 Stain and Protect

    Spray paint your address numbers

Once everything is attached, sand it smooth with a 180-grit sandpaper. Using a lint-free cloth, generously apply Varathane Ultimate Wood Stain and let it sit for 2-3 minutes, based on the richness of colour you prefer. Wipe off excess stain in the direction of the wood grain with a clean, lint-free cloth and let the wood stain dry for 1 hour. For added protection, you can apply some Varathane Waterbased Diamond Wood Finish.

  4. Step 4 Attach your Address Numbers

    Attach your Address Numbers

Using the hardware they came with, attach your house numbers above your planter, centered on the sign board. You can even offset them if that’s the style you’re going for. It’s up to you!

Attach the picture hangers to the back of the sign board so that you can hang it on the wall.
