DIY Rock Painting

A project that’s perfect for both young and old alike, you can showcase your creative side with rock painting. Add colour to your home or some cacti-cuteness to your desk—there’s nothing better than a decorative DIY project that the whole family can enjoy.

  1. Step 1 Wash and Dry the Rocks

    Rocks ready to paint with the paint bottles and brushes.

    Prepare the rocks by washing or rinsing and drying them to remove any dirt and debris.

  2. Step 2 Paint the Rocks

    How to paint rocks

    Time to start your rock painting. Use acrylic paint to paint your rocks. Paint one side of the rock and leave it to dry, then flip and paint the other side. Once you have applied multiple coats of paint, leave the rocks to dry. 

  3. Step 3 Draw on Your Design

    Draw on your design using an oil-based permanent marker. Leave the design to dry.

  4. Step 4 Seal the Rocks

    A person seals the rocks with sealer.

    Seal the rocks with several coats of sealer and leave them to dry.

  5. Step 5 Paint the Ceramic Pot

    A person paints their pot with a teal colour.

    Paint your ceramic pot with the colour of your choice. Leave it to dry.

  6. Step 6 Position and Secure Rocks on the Pot

    A person applies construction adhesive to their pot.
    A person secures their decorated rocks in the pot.

    Apply some construction adhesive before filling your 5-inch ceramic pot with leftover rocks from the bag of pebbles. Leave the pot to dry for 24 hours.

    Secure your decorated rocks with more construction adhesive and leave them to dry for a further 24 hours.

  7. Step 7 Turn Your Rock Painting into a Photo Holder

    A copper wire is looped with a card placed in the top.

    Cut a length of 16-inch copper wire. Make three loops around your painted rock and tighten the wire around the base. Enjoy your rock painting!
