How to Make a Live Edge Coffee Table

  1. Step 1 Gather Materials

    Gather materials.

  2. Step 2 Sand

    Sand

    Use sander or sandpaper to sand slab to a smooth, uniform surface. Always sand in the direction of the grain and wear a dust mask while working to prevent inhaling particles.

  3. Step 3 Dust

    Dust

    Remove all dust from the slab with a vacuum or damp rag. Let dry completely.

  4. Step 4 Measure & Mark for Legs

    Flip the board over to the bottom side and use a tape measure and pencil to mark 3” from the edge, then line the table legs up to the 3” mark and center it.

  5. Step 5 Pre-drill

    Pre-drill holes for the leg screws.

  6. Step 6 Attach Legs

    Attach Legs

    Using a drill or screwdriver with a torque setting, start one screw halfway into the table on both sides of the legs, then drive the second screw all the way into the table and finish the first 2 to keep it centered. Repeat on the other side.

    Optional – for long-term durability and rust prevention over time, cover the legs in a wax, like beeswax or automotive wax, or paint them.

  7. Step 7 Apply Finish

    Stir the Polycrylic® well and apply a thin coat using a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Apply in one direction with the grain. Do not overbrush.

  8. Step 8 Let Dry

    Let Dry

    Let dry for at least 2 hours.

  9. Step 9 Sand

    Sand

    Sand the surface with a very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats.

  10. Step 10 Dust

    Remove all dust.

  11. Step 11 Repeat X2

    Repeat X2

    Apply a second coat. For additional coats, repeat steps 7 through 10, stirring the Polycrylic® as you go. At least three coats are recommended. After the final coat, allow 3 hours before light handling and 24 hours before normal use.

  12. Step 12 Enjoy

    Enjoy
