How to Build a Metal Shed

  1. Step 1 Assemble the Parts for the Bottom, Top, and Middle Frames

Assemble the Parts for the Bottom, Top, and Middle Frames

The bottom frame is the sill upon which you build the entire shed. For now, assemble the front, back, left, and right frames separately, then set them aside. The main frame on this shed is a right angle, called a wall angle, which goes around the top of the walls and reinforces them. The middle frame is called a wall channel and is attached to the walls midway between the floor and roof. You will have a wall angle and a wall channel for each wall. Put them together and set them aside for now.

  2. Step 2 Assemble the Roof and Door Beams

Assemble the Roof and Door Beams

The roof beams run between the front and back walls and support the roof. Assemble each of the beams and set them aside. Put together the parts that will form the track that the door slides on. Put the slides in the track.

  3. Step 3 Assemble and Square the Bottom Frame

Assemble and Square the Bottom Frame

Put the four sides of the bottom frame together with screws. Make sure the assembly is square by measuring the diagonals. If one is longer than the other, push gently on the frame until the diagonals are equal, at which point the frame is square.

  4. Step 4 Assembling the Walls - Part 1

Put a corner panel in the left rear corner of the bottom frame. On this shed, the wider face of the panel goes on the side of the shed. Put a washer over a screw, and screw the panel into the floor frame. Support the panel with a ladder. Rest a panel on the bottom frame so it overlaps the narrow part of the corner panel. Brace it as shown to hold it in place while you work. Put a washer over a screw and screw the two panels together then put in the rest of the screws and washers that connect them. Put in another corner panel and screw a flat panel to it. Repeat on the remaining corners, bracing each one as you work.

  5. Step 5 Assembling the Walls - Part 2

Screw the rear wall angle, which you assembled earlier, to the top of the rear wall. Screw the rear wall channel, which you also assembled earlier, across the middle of the wall. Fasten the sidewall angle and sidewall channels the same way you attached the assemblies to the rear wall.

  6. Step 6 Assembling the Walls - Part 3

Fasten the door track assembly across the top of the front wall. You'll fasten the doorjambs later. Lay out the wall panels as they are not usually identical. Check the part numbers against the directions and lay out the panels in order along the shed's perimeter. Double-check that you have the panels in the right places: if so, the holes on each panel will align with those on its neighbour.

  7. Step 7 Attaching the Panels

    Attaching the Panels

Put each panel in place so the rib on the edge of the panel fits over the rib of an installed panel. (On this shed, one of the ribs is crimped and should always be covered by an uncrimped rib.) Screw the panel in place at the top and bottom, and then screw the middle of the panel to the wall channel. Work your way around the shed, installing neighbouring panels one at a time.

  8. Step 8 Fasten the Doorjamb

    Fasten the Doorjamb

Screw the front wall channel in place. Put the doorjamb in place and bolt it to one adjacent wall panel. Screw through the jamb to attach it to the floor frame, wall channel, and door track. Repeat on the other side.

  9. Step 9 Attaching the Gable and Roof - Part 1

Use brackets to attach the roof beams to the gables. Screw them in place before you put the gables in place. Each gable is made of two panels. Fasten the panels to the front and to the back of the shed.

  10. Step 10 Attaching the Gable and Roof - Part 2

At the back of the shed, shown here, attach a brace to the panels while fastening them together. At the front attach supports for the door track while fastening the gable panels together. Fasten the main beam following the directions supplied by the manufacturer. Once it's in place, fasten the smaller beams as directed.

  11. Step 11 Attaching the Gable and Roof - Part 3

Use brackets to attach the roof beams to the gables. Screw them in place before you put the gables in place. Each gable is made of two panels. Fasten the panels to the front and to the back of the shed.

  12. Step 12 Attaching the Gable and Roof - Part 4

Use brackets to attach the roof beams to the gables. Screw them in place before you put the gables in place. Each gable is made of two panels. Fasten the panels to the front and to the back of the shed.
