How to Set Up a Smart Garage Door Opener

To use a smart garage door system like the popular Chamberlain myQ, you’ll need a moderate Wi-Fi signal around your garage area. Two or more bars are ideal, so use that as your baseline for checking signal strength.

Move your existing router or add an extension router or receiver from your mesh network to the area if you’re not getting at least two bars. This will help boost your Wi-Fi signal and ensure that your smart garage door opener works as intended.

Choose the unit you want to use for your garage door. With new smart garage door systems, there are two ways to get the opening power you want.

The first option is to install a brand new smart garage door opener unit. If you’re transitioning from a manual or older remote-controlled device, this is your best option to ensure that your new smart garaged door functions as intended.

Alternately, you can install a garage door Wi-Fi hub that will work with your brand of smart garage door. This will give you control of your garage door via Wi-Fi. Note that this will only work with smart garage door models made after 1993 by a compatible brand. Your garage door opener will also need to be equipped with safety sensors.

Install the garage door opener system on your ceiling using the supplied mounting hardware. Most people choose to install their new smart system where they had a previous automated, remote control-style opener. If you need help, consider having a professional Home Depot installer do it for you.

Once your garage door opener system is installed, you’ll press the yellow button three times to enable Wi-Fi mode. Check your manual if these instructions don’t apply to your smart garage door opener model. Models other than the Chamberlain myQ may differ slightly.

If you’re only installing a Wi-Fi hub, you’ll want to do this by placing the mounting bracket within three to five feet of your existing opener.

Secure the Wi-Fi hub on the mounting bracket and connect the unit to power. Wait for the flashing blue light, or if you’re using a different model, an indication that the unit is searching for a Wi-Fi connection.

Staying near your hub, look to connect via your smart device and the appropriate app.

Place the sensor that came with your Wi-Fi hub on the inside of the garage door using strong fastening strips. Do this somewhere that’s within easy reach so you can change batteries and access your sensor down the road.

Pull out the plastic tab to activate the battery. For other models, you may need to insert batteries or remove a back cover to activate the batteries.

Download and set up the app that you’ll use to control your smart garage door opener system or Wi-Fi hub. You’ll want to follow the setup prompts closely while staying near your garage door opener system or Wi-Fi hub during the process.

Enable home data for the best possible performance when using a whole opener system or Wi-Fi hub.

Open and close your garage door by using the app to ensure that it’s working properly. Then, use your wall-mount button or standard remote control to open the garage door. You should see a notification on your smart device app letting you know exactly what action has taken place. Check your settings and notifications if you don’t see an alert, as they may be blocked by your device.

If you do get an alert, you can continue testing the app by having a friend or family member open and close your garage door while you’re further away. This will give you a better indication that the smart garage door opener system or Wi-Fi hub that you installed is working as desired.
