Frequently Asked Questions
-
- “HVAC” is an acronym for “Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.” It refers to the various systems we use for heating and cooling our homes and indoor spaces. The Home Depot offers a full range of HVAC systems and components available for installation.
-
- Your HVAC installation cost will depend on a number of factors unique to your home, such as square footage, local climate, budget considerations and energy efficiency needs.
- The Home Depot offers a range of financing options to make your purchase as affordable and stress-free as possible. To find out more, schedule a free consultation with a Home Depot Installer.
-
- High-efficiency HVAC systems are designed to use less energy to heat or cool your home. They don’t have to work as hard to do the same job as a lower-efficiency unit
- For example, a high-efficiency gas furnace rated at 96 per cent AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is designed to deliver 96 per cent of the heat it produces to your home and lose just 4 per cent. An older system, at 80 per cent AFUE, loses 20 per cent
- Upgrading to a system that wastes less energy means you’re consuming less energy and, most likely, saving money
-
- Choosing between a gas furnace and heat pump mainly depends on whether your home is set up for gas or electric heating, or if you have a preference for one or the other.
- Heat pumps are sometimes preferred over air conditioners because they provide heating in addition to cooling
- Ductless air conditioners and heat pumps are typically used for individual rooms and small spaces, while central air conditioners and central heat pumps are designed for a whole home
-
- The correct-sized HVAC unit depends on the square footage of your home, as well as the number of rooms; during your free, in-home consultation, a Home Depot heating and air conditioning contractor will help you find the right-sized HVAC system for your home.
- Bigger is not necessarily better: an HVAC system that is too large for your home may not regulate temperature or humidity as efficiently or effectively as a correctly sized one. A mismatched system may also break down sooner
-
- If your gas furnace is taking too long to ignite, failing to deliver enough heat, showing signs of corrosion, producing odd smells (such as rotten eggs) or having frequent pilot light failures, our furnace installers may recommend a replacement.
- For a central air conditioner or heat pump, look for: ineffective heating or cooling, excessive noise, buildup of moisture or humidity, longer run times or foul “burning” smells. All are likely signs you need to consult our air conditioning and heat pump installers to determine whether to replace your current system.
-
- If a major fix is necessary, first determine whether repairs will be covered under warranty.
- If your HVAC system is more than 10 years old, the cost of repairing or replacing a major component may not be worth it compared to hiring a heating and air conditioning contractor for your furnace and/or air conditioning replacement.
-
- With annual maintenance, an HVAC system should last for many years. Still, the efficiency of an HVAC unit can drop over time, meaning your utility bills go up
- An aging furnace may even pose a serious health risk to anyone living in your home: if the heat exchanger or flue pipes have cracked, it could be leaking carbon monoxide
-
- AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is used for rating gas furnaces. It measures the percentage of heat produced versus the overall fuel consumed. Anything over 90 per cent is considered to be “high efficiency”
- SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is used to measure the cooling efficiency of air conditioners and heat pumps. While all new units are rated 13.00 or higher, SEER ratings below 10.00 were common just a decade ago
-
- While removal of the old HVAC unit is covered as part of this service, disposal is not covered and must be arranged with your heating and air conditioning installers before they arrive at your home.
- Please note that additional charges may apply for disposal of your old HVAC unit
-
- High efficiency is best. Look for furnaces with AFUE ratings of 95 per cent or higher, air conditioners with SEER ratings of 13.0 or higher, and heat pumps with HSPF ratings of 8.2 or higher.
- Consider trusted brands. The Home Depot’s heating and air conditioning installers carry dependable heating and cooling equipment options from top brands such as Trane, Comfortmaker, Ameristar, and more.
- Our air conditioning, heat pump and furnace installers will ensure your new system is sized to match your home’s square footage – or, for ductless air conditioners and heat pumps, matched to the size of your room.
-
- On average, a gas furnace can last 15-20 years, while a central air conditioner can be expected to last 10-15 years. Heat pumps can last anywhere between 10-20 years.
- Unique conditions such as local climate can put additional stress on these systems and affect how long they last.
- We strongly advise annual maintenance appointments with a licensed Home Depot heating and air conditioning contractor in order to maximize the useful life of your system and pre-empt the possibility of costly repairs.
-
- “BTU” stands for “British Thermal Unit”, which is used to measure thermal energy output. It takes 1 BTU to change the temperature of a pound of water at sea level by 1 degree Fahrenheit.
- BTU ratings on HVAC systems reflect overall output. The amount of BTUs you need depends on the size of the space to be heated or cooled. Request a FREE consultation today with The Home Depot’s heating and air conditioning installers and they will help you find the correctly sized HVAC system for your home.
-
- Yes. All Trane furnaces, central air conditioners and heat pumps are compatible with smart thermostat technology. The same goes for all similar systems available from a licensed Home Depot heating and air conditioning contractor.
- In some cases, your home's HVAC wiring may need to be adjusted to accommodate a smart thermostat. During your free, in-home consultation, a Home Depot Installer will be able to determine whether any such work is required

Five Reasons Why You Should Replace Your Old HVAC System
If you have a gas furnace, central air conditioner, heat pump or ductless mini-split system that’s over 10 years old, or even approaching the 10-year mark, you might prefer to keep it for a few years longer if it still appears to be in working order. While this may seem prudent, there are good reasons to reconsider and upgrade your heating and cooling equipment now, with the help of The Home Depot’s licensed air conditioning, heat pump and furnace installers.
Protect yourself – and your wallet
If your HVAC system is more than 10 years old, it’s likely no longer under warranty. This means, with few exceptions, you’re on the hook when the heating and air conditioning contractor arrives to repair your aging equipment. While select components, such as heat exchangers and compressors, often carry long-term or even lifetime warranties, you may still be left dealing with exceptions on things such as labour or external components. These exceptions tend to become the norm in repair situations for old HVAC systems once they’re off-warranty. Better to save yourself the aggravation.
Consider your safety
While it’s tempting to keep an old gas furnace for as long as it still heats your home, there’s a point when doing so becomes not only unwise, but potentially dangerous. This is because wear and tear on an aging gas furnace can cause small cracks to form in the heat exchanger or the flue pipes, which in turn allows carbon monoxide to leak into your home. If left undetected, it risks potentially becoming a serious health hazard. Our experienced furnace installers will be able to identify whether upgrading to a newer, safer system is the best choice.
Choose reliability
Most heating and air conditioning installers will tell you that your system, if properly maintained, can be expected to last 15-20 years. This is true; however, you can’t expect the same level of reliability as the unit gets older. The simple fact is that most systems become less reliable as they age and their components begin to wear out and break down.
When considering normal wear and tear, along with warranty and safety issues, you start to see clear benefits to upgrading your outdated HVAC equipment. When weighing the cost of repairing an aging furnace versus scheduling a new, high-efficiency furnace and air conditioning installation, the better option is more likely the latter.
Boost your home’s energy efficiency
Save the environment and save money. With HVAC equipment constantly improving and becoming more energy efficient, even a high-efficiency unit from a decade ago can’t compete head-to-head with similar systems offered today. This means that if you haven’t had a new air conditioning and/or furnace installation done in the last 10 years or more, it’s virtually guaranteed that you’re not benefitting from the great advances in energy efficiency we’ve experienced since your last AC and furnace installation.
Upgrade your equipment
New HVAC systems work better than aging ones, so any new air conditioning installation or furnace installation is basically an upgrade from the get-go. But many new HVAC systems contain other improvements, such as variable-speed blower motors or even smart home compatibility, that help them deliver superior comfort throughout your home more efficiently and effectively. In general, it has become much more affordable to purchase high-efficiency air conditioning or furnace installation, and innovations that were considered top-of-the-line a few years ago are now standard even for some lower-priced systems.
Investing in high-efficiency air conditioning and furnace installation can save you money in the long run and provide lasting comfort to your home. Request a FREE, in-home consultation with The Home Depot’s heating and air conditioning installers and plan your new HVAC installation today.
