How to Choose the Best Bathroom Faucet

Replacing your bathroom faucet is a small change that can greatly impact the look and feel of your bathroom. New bathroom faucets are available in a variety of styles and finishes and are priced to suit any budget. If you’re doing a larger or full bathroom renovation, you can even pick other fixtures that will match your faucet perfectly. We’ll show you how to pick the type of bathroom faucet for your space in this guide.

Bathroom Faucet Types

When looking for a new bathroom faucet, it’s important to decide which type you need. There are a few different types including centreset, single-hole and widespread faucets that can be used on various types of sinks. Here are some of the differences:

A chrome, single-hole faucet is shown on a white countertop.

Single-Hole Bathroom Faucets

Single-hole faucets fit on sinks with just one hole, or three holes with a deck plate. These usually have only one handle to control hot and cold water flow.

A centreset, black bathroom faucet is shown on a white countertop.

Centreset Bathroom Faucets

A centreset faucet has both handles combined onto one base, usually about 4 inches wide. They can be installed on the sink itself or onto the countertop.

A golden widespread faucet is shown on a white bathroom countertop.

Widespread Bathroom Faucets

A widespread faucet has two separate handles, one for hot and one for cold, with a centre-mounted spout. The standard width for these faucets is at least 8 inches.

A wall-mounted faucet is shown mounter on a teal, tiled wall.

Wall-Mount Bathroom Faucets

A wall-mounted bathroom faucet is similar to a regular faucet, except it is mounted on the wall above the sink, and not to the sink/countertop.

A vessel bathroom faucet is shown on a white countertop.

Vessel Bathroom Faucets

Vessel faucets are made taller for them to fit over a vessel or bowl-shaped sink.

Bathroom Faucet Installation Fit

Depending on how many holes your countertop or sink has, you’ll need to find a faucet that fits over them. Single-hole faucets are best for smaller bathrooms. Two-hole faucets are most common on wall-mount or single handle faucets with a separate spout. Three holes can accommodate widespread, centreset and even a single-hole faucet with a deck plate.

Bathroom Faucet Handle Options

Single Handle

Single-handle bathroom faucets use one handle or lever to control both the hot and cold water flow. They can be on top of or beside the faucet itself, making this a great choice for smaller spaces.

A brushed-nickel double-handle faucet is shown on a cream coloured countertop.

Double Handles

Double-handle bathroom faucets have a separate handle or lever for hot and cold water control and are ideal for larger bathrooms.

A chrome lever-handle faucet is shown on a white countertop.

Lever Handles

For a modern look, add a lever-style handle to your bathroom. They're one of the most common handle types and can even help to make turning the tap on and off easier.

A gold bathroom faucet with a knob-handle design is shown on a marble countertop.

Knob Handles

Knob handles offer a more traditional look and can come in various materials and styles.

A black bathroom faucet with a cross-handle design is shown on a white countertop.

Cross Handles

Cross-handle bathroom faucets are exactly what they sound like, with cross – or “X”-shaped handles – for controlling water flow. They can help add a more traditional look to your bathroom sink area.

Bathroom Faucet Popular Features

While types, fit and finishes are usually your most important choices, there are some other valuable options to consider when purchasing your bathroom faucet.

Touchless Bathroom Faucets

Touchless bathroom faucets are activated by simply placing your hands underneath to start the water flow. This adds convenience and reduces bacteria build-up and transfer of germs.

Pop-Up Drains

Pop-up drains can be opened and closed by pressing down on them in the sink basin. This makes it easy to fill and drain your sink when needed.

ADA Compliant

ADA compliant faucets must be easily activated using only one hand, making them effortlessly usable by anyone with a disability.

Water Saving

WaterSense® faucets use less water and perform as well as – if not better than – traditional faucet models.
