How to Paint Bathroom Vanity

A pink vanity in a bathroom.

If you’ve always wanted to give your bathroom a new look, but don’t want to do a complete renovation, consider repainting your vanity. Painting bathroom cabinets can bring a bright, fresh new colour to your space and can be just what you need to re-invent your bathroom décor. You can even paint your hardware to match or accent your new vanity. We’ll show you how to paint your bathroom cabinets in this simple how-to guide.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time:
  1. Step 1 Select the Best Type of Paint for Your Bathroom Cabinets and Hardware

A few paint cans in various colours spread out on a table.

Selecting the right type of paint is a key part of successfully painting a vanity. A satin or a semi-gloss paint finish will protect the vanity from dust and debris and ensure the paint lasts as long as possible. Consider using a primer to ensure the colour of paint sticks to the surface as well as it can, which will leave you with a better end result.

Giving existing bathroom hardware a coat of spray paint is a cost-effective way to extend the life of your hardware. You’ll want to find a spray paint that is conducive to the material you are painting so it sticks properly. To ensure the best results, use a primer to help the paint stick the surface.

  2. Step 2 Prepare the Surfaces for Painting

A vanity that has been prepped to begin painting.

To prep your vanity for painting, first remove any hardware (handles, knobs or pulls). Wipe your vanity down with a heavy-duty cleaner to remove any oils or dirt. If you’re filling holes or cracks before painting, do so with a wood filler and then sand smooth. Wipe away any sanding residue.

Place your vanity on a drop cloth to avoid any overspray or drips getting on your floors.

  3. Step 3 Spray Paint the Vanity Hardware

Cabinet hardware lays on a drop cloth and is painted black.

With your painting space prepped, you can start by painting the hardware if that is part of your project plan. Follow the directions on the spray can to show you how far away to hold it when spray painting. Keep that distance consistent as it will give you the best, best even coverage. Spray in a steady, back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. Keep the can in motion while spraying to avoid drips. Once the coat of primer is dry as per the instructions on the package, it’s time to move onto the coloured spray paint, following the same method used as the primer. Expect to do at least two coats of paint depending on the colour and the surface type you’re spraying.

  4. Step 4 Paint the Bathroom Cabinets

A person uses a roller to paint a vanity.

With your hardware painted, it’s now time to move onto your cabinets. Using a paint brush, start by painting any inlays or bevels to ensure the paint covers all the cracks. Then with a roller, roll out the paint in slow controlled strokes, overlapping your previous strokes with the next.

Let your first coat of paint dry for the time listed on the container before giving it a second coat. Once the second coat is completely dry and you are happy with the amount of coverage, it’s time to re-attach the doors of the vanity, remove the painter’s tape and drop cloth.

  5. Step 5 Reinstall Vanity Hardware

With your cabinets and hardware painted and dry, you re-attach your cabinet hardware using the original screws. You’ve not got a custom, beautiful vanity as the showpiece of your bathroom!
