How to Paint a Deck

A painted wooden deck is shown in partial shade.

Repainting your deck is a great way to freshen it up, or to give it a completely different look. There are a few things to consider in order to get the job done right, however, including what time of year to do it, how to get it ready for paint and more. We’ll show you all that and more in this handy guide.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time:
  1. Step 1 Choose the Best Time to Paint Your Deck

A wooden deck is shown in the sunlight.

The process of painting your deck involves sanding and cleaning it thoroughly and waiting for your deck to dry before beginning the painting process, so plan for two to three days to prepare the deck for painting.

Choose a time of the year where you can expect 10- to 30-degree temperatures with no rain forecast. Make sure you double-check the weather before you begin your project. Plan your day to avoid applying paint in direct sunlight if possible, working in sections as the sun moves across your deck.

  2. Step 2 Sand your Deck

A person sands their deck with an upright drum sander.

Start by sweeping away dirt, dust and debris from your deck with a broom. A push broom is a smart choice for a larger deck.

On a non-rainy day, consider renting a drum sander with 80-grit sandpaper to sand your deck. The trick to sanding the deck properly is to go steady: not too slow or too fast with the drum sander. If you have not used a drum sander prior, employees at The Home Depot Canada Tool Rental Centre can show you the basics, or instructions found on the tool rentals webpage can guide you. They’re easy to use, so you should be up and running in no time.

  3. Step 3 Thoroughly Clean your Deck

A person uses a hose to clean their deck.

With a water hose, or pressure washer on a light setting, wash your deck to remove dust particles and let it dry completely. Using a pressure washer set to a high pressure can alter the colour of your deck, so remember to set it correctly.

  4. Step 4 Paint Your Deck

A person puts a paint brush into a can of porch and patio paint.
A person uses a roller to apply paint to their deck.

When applying paint to your deck, use a 4-inch paint brush to help cut in faster along the border of the deck and in between deck boards. This especially helps if your deck boards are rounded and/or have been previously painted. Doing this will ensure the paint covers between the deck boards.

Once done, switch to a paint roller and handle - if possible, one with an extender to complete the job. Remember to let your paint dry for one day before placing furniture on your deck.
