Skill Level: Beginner
Time:
  1. Step 1 Measure

    Measure

Measure the desired wall width and height. Make a scale diagram to help visualize the wall grid. Your grid will include an outline of the 1x4-inch boards on the outer edge of the wall, and 3 ½-inch wide vertical and horizontal strips to create a tiled pattern for your DIY wall panels.

  2. Step 2 Mark Wall

    Mark Wall

Using a chalk line and a bottle of chalk, mark the grid on the wall. If you don’t own a chalk line, you can also use a level, measuring tape and a pencil. Make sure your markings are accurate to ensure your DIY wall panelling is even.

  3. Step 3 Cut and Install Framing Strips

Cut different 1x4 board (3 ½-inch) length strips to create your DIY wall panels. You'll need long pieces for the outer frame and the horizontal components. You'll also need short pieces for the vertical details.

Starting with the outer frame, pin-nail the 1x4-inch pieces around the wall. Then, with the help of a level, pin-nail each horizontal piece with finishing nails. Finally, install your vertical pieces.

  4. Step 4 Caulk Seams

Use caulking to fill any gaps, such as nail holes and seams. You can choose to use DAP Window and Door Acrylic Latex Caulk, or another suitable option. Be sure to sand away any excess putty.

  5. Step 5 Paint Your Panelled Wall

Painting your DIY wall panelling is a great way to add visual flair to the room. Prime your walls to ensure an even coat, and paint your panelled wall in a colour of your choice. Make sure to use a paintbrush to get into all the corners and edges.
