How to Apply Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Peel and Stick Wallpaper.

One of the easiest ways to update a room in your home is by applying new wallpaper. While traditional wallpaper can be difficult to apply, peel and stick wallpaper can be applied easily and quickly, transforming the look and feel of a room with little effort. It’s also a removable wallpaper, so you can update the look of your rooms regularly if desired. In this guide, we’ll show you how to install peel and stick wallpaper.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time:
  1. Step 1 Prepare Wall and Wallpaper

    Prepare Wall and Wallpaper.

The first step to applying your new self-adhesive wallpaper is to prepare your walls. Make sure you’ve turned off the power and remove any socket covers and plates. Wash your walls with a soft sponge or cloth to remove any dust or dirt. Once dry, use a level and a pencil to create a straight, vertical line on your wall. This will be the starting point for your first strip.

  2. Step 2 Measure Strips and Install Wallpaper

    Measure Strips and Install Wallpaper.

Make sure to cut your strips of wallpaper at the same height as your wall using a sharp razor blade. Line the strips up with the line you created earlier and peel back about 12-inches of the backing. Stick the exposed part of the wallpaper to the wall, and continue to remove the backing while smoothing out and sticking the wallpaper as you go.

  3. Step 3 Remove Air Bubbles with a Smoother

Remove Air Bubbles with a Smoother.

You’ll inevitably have some air bubbles behind your wallpaper while sticking it to your walls. Remove these by taking a plastic smoother and slowly moving it down the paper, over the air bubbles, pushing them out from behind the wallpaper. Once it’s smooth, repeat these steps for your other strips. You’ll have a new-looking wall in no time!
