How to Hang a Picture

Hanging a picture correctly requires it to be straight, level and at the proper height for your room. You’ll also need to consider they type of wall you’re hanging it on and take into account the weight of your picture to make sure that you’re supporting it correctly. We’ll show you how to properly hang a picture in this handy guide.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time:
  1. Step 1 Decide on Your Picture Hanging Method

A person hangs a picture on a wall.

There are a variety of ways to hang a picture. When deciding which method to use, consider the weight of the picture and what type of wall you’re hanging it on. A heavy picture on drywall will require a more heavy-duty hanger and maybe a drywall anchor, while a lighter picture may only require a traditional picture hanging kit to keep it up. There are even adhesive strips that you can use so, if you ever decide to take down the picture, you can remove them without damaging your paint.

If you’re hanging a heavier picture on a drywall wall, and you’re lucky enough that your placement aligns with a stud, you can likely get away with a less strong option, as the stud will bear most of the weight of the frame.

One more thing to look for is whether or not your frame has hardware for hanging it built into it. Some frames come with a rigid strip to keep it hung in place on a nail or hanger, while others can come with a rope, string or wire attached and can be hung using a variety of methods.

  2. Step 2 Determine the Placement of the Frame

A person marks where they will hang the picture on a wall.
A person uses tape to mark the height of a picture that they’re about to hang on a wall.

When plotting out where to hang your picture, it’s easier to use squares of paper to envision where your actual pictures will go. They’re easier to move around and rearrange. If you’re wondering how high to hang your picture, try and keep the centre of your picture at an average eye level, then use that height to arrange any smaller or larger frames around it.

Once you’ve figured out where you want to hang your picture, mark out where your fastener(s) will go on the wall.

  3. Step 3 Install the Chosen Hardware

A person screws picture hanging hardware into a wall.

Once you’ve marked where your fasteners will go, you can attach them to the wall.

If you’re using a picture hanging kit, you’ll have everything you need in one spot. These usually have a piece that the picture will hag on and a spot for a nail or screw to fit through it and attach to the wall.

If you’re using a drywall anchor, make sure you avoid any studs nearby and drill into the wall with a bit that’s a tiny bit smaller than your anchor. Then put the anchor into the hole and hammer it gently until it’s flush with the wall. Then you can add a screw and hang your picture from it.

Finally, if you’re using adhesive strips, simply peel off the adhesive cover and apply it to the wall. Hold it firm for a few seconds as instructed by the manufacturer and you should be good to hang your art from it.
