Step 1 Gather Materials
Gather materials.
Build your own live edge coffee table with this easy to follow DIY. Get the high-end look of live edge furniture for less using a pine slab, steel legs and some know-how.
There are 12 steps to completing this project:
Gather materials.
Use sander or sandpaper to sand slab to a smooth, uniform surface. Always sand in the direction of the grain and wear a dust mask while working to prevent inhaling particles.
Remove all dust from the slab with a vacuum or damp rag. Let dry completely.
Flip the board over to the bottom side and use a tape measure and pencil to mark 3” from the edge, then line the table legs up to the 3” mark and center it.
Pre-drill holes for the leg screws.
Using a drill or screwdriver with a torque setting, start one screw halfway into the table on both sides of the legs, then drive the second screw all the way into the table and finish the first 2 to keep it centered. Repeat on the other side.
Optional – for long-term durability and rust prevention over time, cover the legs in a wax, like beeswax or automotive wax, or paint them.
Stir the Polycrylic® well and apply a thin coat using a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Apply in one direction with the grain. Do not overbrush.
Let dry for at least 2 hours.
Sand the surface with a very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats.
Remove all dust.
Apply a second coat. For additional coats, repeat steps 7 through 10, stirring the Polycrylic® as you go. At least three coats are recommended. After the final coat, allow 3 hours before light handling and 24 hours before normal use.
