Pumpkin Painting Ideas & Tips

Painted pumpkins

Painted pumpkins can add a touch of class and style to any fall décor. We’ll show you how to pick the right pumpkin and transform it into a piece of art that can stand alone or blend in with your existing fall or Halloween décor.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time:
  1. Step 1 Choose and Clean Pumpkin

You’ll need to choose a pumpkin that is the right size for your project: larger ones for bigger spaces and smaller ones if your space is smaller or if you’re planning on grouping them together. Try to match the colour tone of your pumpkin with the colour you want to paint it for easier application. Lighter paints look better on lighter base-coloured pumpkins while darker paints look better on darker pumpkins. Also make sure to check that there are no rotten or soft spots on the outside. Finally, try to find a pumpkin that sits flat and doesn’t roll or wobble. Once you’ve found the perfect pumpkin, wash the outside with water and a paper towel to remove the dirt and then let it dry completely. This will get the surface ready for painting.

  2. Step 2 Seal or Paint Pumpkin with a Base Coat

Cover the stem of your pumpkin with tape or foil to keep them paint-free. Then, using paint or primer, cover your pumpkin in a base coat. You can even use a chalk paint if you like. Once the base coat is dry, you can leave it as is for a simple look, or start applying a more intricate design with other paint colours.

  3. Step 3 Paint the Pumpkin

Now comes the fun part. Your design can be anything you like: patterns like polka dots and stripes can create a unique, trendy look, while flowers, metallic paints and other options can help you create a design that really shines.

  4. Step 4 Try a Few of These Pumpkin Painting Ideas

There are so many options for painting your fall pumpkin. Distressed chalk paints and shiny metallic paints can create a look that’s sure to impress. Use a stencil to add words or images and make them really stand out. Zig-zag lines or freehand drawings can even be applied with markers for a one-of-a-kind look.

  5. Step 5 Display your Pumpkins as Fall and Halloween Décor

Now that you’ve picked the perfect pumpkin and transformed it into a showpiece, it’s time to show it off. Place painted pumpkins with other fall or Halloween décor, blending them in or using them as accent pieces to take your seasonal look to the next level. Place them around your home and yard to add an extra bit of fall fashion to the inside and outside of your home.
