How to Use Expanding Foam Insulation

Expanding foam insulation is a great way to block drafts and insulate your home. Another great tip is to use Great Stuff™ Pestblock foam insulation to give yourself added protection against pests. Here’s how to get the best of both worlds.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time:
  1. Step 1 Remove Debris and Shake the Can for 60 Seconds

Remove Debris and Shake the Can for 60 Seconds

Remove any debris from the area you’re about to seal. Then, to ensure that your Great Stuff™ Pestblock insulating foam is completely mixed and ready for use, simply shake the can vigorously for 60 seconds.

  2. Step 2 Install the Smart Dispenser

    Install the Smart Dispenser

The smart dispenser makes insulating a breeze. To install it, twist the dispenser on to the top of the spray can.

  3. Step 3 Invert the Can and Insert it into the Gap

When you’re ready to start insulation, turn the can upside down and place the smart dispenser into the gap you’re about to fill. Press the trigger and spray the foam. Remember, your Great Stuff™ Pestblock insulating foam will expand up to an inch, so take that into account and don’t over-fill.

  4. Step 4 Use Acetone to Remove any Overspray

Use Acetone to Remove any Overspray

If you’ve got any foam on areas you don’t want it, use a cloth soaked in acetone to get rid of the excess foam spray. Be mindful of the surface though, as acetone can be abrasive.

  5. Step 5 Let the Foam Cure then Trim Excess

Let the Foam Cure then Trim Excess

Wait 10-15 minutes for the fam to cure, and then trim away the excess with a blade. The foam should lose its tackiness when cured, so if it still hasn’t cured after the 15 minutes, use some water to finish the job. Once you’ve trimmed it, you’re done!
