DIY Fence Planters

Seven planters are hanging on a wooden fence.

Make your backyard come to life with this DIY fence planter. Follow these simple steps and learn how to decorate your fence by hanging planters for your flowers or herbs.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time:
  1. Step 1 Remove the Can's Handle and Paint

A person is spray painting a tin paint can in white.

Remove the handles from your tin cans.

Spray paint your tin cans white and let them dry. Add multiple coats if needed.

  2. Step 2 Add Painter's Tape and Paint Uncovered Surface

A white can has the top and bottom protected with painter’s tape, while a person is spray painting the uncovered section.

Add some painter’s tape at the top and bottom of your tin cans. Spray paint the uncovered surface (middle of the can) with any colour you would like.

    Let them dry.

  3. Step 3 Attach Planters to Fence

A tin can planter is attached to a wooden fence.

Measure ½-inch from the top of each can and pre-drill a hole on the marked location. Reach into the can and attach it to the fence using the pre-drilled hole and 1-5/8-inch deck screws. Add some soil and plants to your new hanging fence planters.

    You’re all done!
