How to Build a DIY Planter Box

Adding a DIY wooden planter box to your outdoor décor is a great way to add flowers, veggies or other nature elements to your yard space. It’s really easy to do, so follow these simple instructions to build your very own planter.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time:
  1. Step 1 Measure and Cut Sides and Bottom Boards

A person uses a mitre saw to cut wood.

Building a planter box is an easy project to do alone or with the family. Once you’ve determined the length of your planter, start by cutting deck boards for the sides and bottom of your planter. Your side and base panels should all be the same length. Then determine the height you’d like your planter. As an example, you can make your planter box two boards high, which would be the height of two deck boards pressed together at the edge.

  2. Step 2 Seal Cut Edges

A person seals the edges of their cut lumber.

When cutting the lumber for your DIY planter box, be sure to seal your cut edges with a quality sealer. Sealing the edges of your lumber stops moisture from getting into the wood and causing rot or decay, ensuring that your planter will stand up to the elements and last a long time.

  3. Step 3 Cut End Panels

A person uses a mitre saw to cut the end panels.

Next, cut your end panels. For this planter, we’ll be using the width of the deck boards as is and standing them up, cut to the height of your planter.

  4. Step 4 Assemble the Planter

A person uses clamps to hold their lumber in place while drilling.

Finally, you’ll assemble your planter box. Use clamps to hold your lumber in place and pre-drill your screw holes to prevent splitting the wood. Use galvanized wood screws, as they will stand up to the elements without rusting or corroding. Once you’ve screwed your plumber into place, you’re finished! Now add some soil and your favourite plants!
