How to Get Rid of Ants

Ant infestations can be a pain and usually occur in the spring and fall. We’ll show you how to get rid of ants in the house and outdoors, and prevent them from coming back in this simple guide.

Skill Level: Beginner
Time:
  1. Step 1 Identify Ant Activity

Ants feed in a large group.

It’s important to be able to tell the difference between ants and termites. Ants have long legs, large, drooping antennae and a clearly segmented body. Be sure you’ve got ants before continuing with these tips.

  2. Step 2 Use Baits on Problem Areas and Entry Points

A person places some ant bait at a problem area.

Bait traps are effective indoors and easy to use. Placing them in problem areas like drains, under stoves and in cabinets can help to eliminate entire colonies of ants. Be sure to use both carb- and protein-based bait for maximum efficiency.

  3. Step 3 Spot Treat with Ant Sprays

A person applies ant spray to an outdoor problem area near the side of their house.

Non-repellent ant sprays don’t kill ants immediately but allow them to take it back to their colony and spread it there, eliminating them. They’re best used around floorboards, windows and doors and patio sliding doors.

  4. Step 4 Get Rid of Ant Nests Outdoors

A person applies granules onto an outdoor ant nest.

Use liquid bait and granules near ant trails to help control your ant infestation. Liquid spray is good for covering large areas, especially near grates and pipe openings. Granules can be placed on soil, making it good for nests and the surrounding area.

  5. Step 5 Consider Some Natural Ant Repellents

Natural and food-based ant repellents on display.

Choosing natural repellents can be effective as well. Diatomaceous earth is simply crumbled rock powder that penetrates and dehydrates ants, while borax can be mixed with powdered sugar to both attract and eliminate ants. Don’t use these near drafty locations or near food prep areas though. Food-based repellents like white vinegar, coffee grounds, red pepper, mint and others are also a great, natural alternative to help control ant infestations.

  6. Step 6 Seal Cracks and Crevices

A sealant is applied to a crack in the concrete to help control ants.

Sealing cracks in the pavement or foundation of your home can help stop ants from gaining entry. Be sure to use the correct sealant based on the material.

  7. Step 7 Keep Your Home Clean

    Keep Your Home Clean

Keeping your home clean can help you prevent ant infestations. Be sure to keep your countertops, appliances, trash cans and other items clean. Store your food in sealed containers, be sure to empty your drip pans and keep your drains covered.

  8. Step 8 Clean up Your Yard

Foliage and dead leaves are stored in bins to keep them off the ground until they’re collected.

To help minimize the ant presence in your yard, keep branches and shrubs trimmed short and clean up any dead foliage on the ground. Be sure to clean your gutters and keep your trash bins at least 10 feet from your home.
