Before digging, call your local utility provider to identify the location of any underground utilities. Healthy trees and shrubs will last for decades, so consider your long-term landscaping goals and how the full-grown trees and shrubs will fit in. Dig a hole 2x the width and 1.5x the depth of the root ball.
Gently remove the plant from the container by gently hitting the sides and bottom of the container until the root ball is loosened. If the roots are growing in a circular pattern slice through a couple of sides on the root ball and gently separate the circling roots. Place the plant into the hole ensuring that the roots are pointing downward and outward then cover with 50/50 mixture of native soil and Miracle-Gro® Garden Soil Tree & Shrub.
Build a reservoir of soil around the base to direct water to the roots. Water deeply with Miracle-Gro® Quick Start® to reduce transplant shock and promote vigorous root growth.
Continue to water throughout the season as the first year or two of watering is the most important factor in the survival of your tree or shrub. If planting a larger tree or shrub, loosely tie it to a sturdy tree stake for support. This makes your tree or shrub sturdier once it begins to mature.
Feed your tree or shrub every three months with Miracle-Gro® Shake ’n Feed® Flowering Trees & Shrubs. Feed regularly to promote deep, lush green foliage and colourful blooms.
