DIY Outdoor Games Series

It’s game time! With our DIY Outdoor Game Series, you’ll learn how to make Ring Toss and Dominos, so you never have to search for something fun to do this summer. Try these easy DIY projects this weekend.

  1. Step 1 Gather Materials

    Materials to build games

    All of the materials used in this project are available at your local Home Depot. Proceed to Step 2 to learn how to make Ring Toss or skip to Step 8 for Dominos.

  2. Step 2 Cut & Sand Wood

    For this project we used one piece of dowel and cut it into 8” pieces. We cut the pine shelving in half so we had two 18”x12” pieces.

    Don’t forget you can get your wood cut at your local Home Depot! Just ask an associate for help.

  3. Step 3 Paint The Wood

    We spray painted the dowel a bright blue, and the pine shelf white with Chalked paint.

  4. Step 4 Cut Rope

    Cut the rope into 8-12” pieces. Ask an associate for help if you need it.

  5. Step 5 Tape Rope

    Using duct tape in two different colours, tape the ends of the rope together to make 8 rings, 4 of each colour.

  6. Step 6 Glue & Screw Dowel To Shelf

    Using wood glue, adhere the dowel to the shelf. To secure it, use wood screws.

  7. Step 7 Let’s Play!

    After the glue has dried and the game is secure, you can play your new ring toss.

  8. Step 8 Cut & Sand Wood

    For this project we used a 10 ft piece of cedar and cut our dominos into 1 ft pieces. To play a full game of dominos, you will need 28 pieces total.

    Don’t forget you can get your wood cut at your local Home Depot! Just ask an associate for help.

  9. Step 9 Mark Wood

    Using a pencil and ruler, mark where the dots of the dominos will be placed on the wood.

  10. Step 10 Paint Wood

    Using the end of a mini foam roller and black craft paint, add the dots of the dominos, and use a paint brush to add the line down the centre.

  11. Step 11 Spray Sealer

    To ensure the dominos will last in exterior weather, add a spray sealer.

  12. Step 12 Let’s Play!

    Once the sealer is dried, enjoy your new game of dominos.
