A torn or damaged window screen is not only unsightly, but it removes the protection from the outside of your window, allowing insects and other pests into your home. Completing a window screen replacement is easier than you think, and we’ll show you how to do it in a few simple steps.
There are 4 steps to completing this project:
Most window screens have a vinyl spline that holds the mesh in place. Start by removing this spline from the aluminum frame. Pry the spline out with a screwdriver and then pull it out with a pair of pliers. Check if it’s still flexible and in good shape, because if so, you can reuse it when you replace the mesh. If not, you’ll need to buy a new one. Once the spline is completely removed, you can remove the old screen.
Roll your new screen fabric over the frame, and cut it to length with a pair of scissors. Make sure that it overlaps the frame on all sides as you’ll be tucking it back into the frame when putting the spline back in.
With the mesh laying over the window, take the spline and align it with the groove on the window frame. Using a screwdriver, press the spline back into the groove and continue until the spline is completely inserted all the way around the frame – making sure to keep the screen fabric tightly pulled. You can use a spline roller to make this job a lot easier.
Once your spline is completely inserted around the frame and your fabric is tight, cut the remaining fabric away with a utility knife to complete the project.
