Avoiding Gift Card Scams

Gift card scams are on the rise and are becoming a serious issue for major retailers and their customers. But, there are some things you can do to avoid falling victim. How do you avoid gift card scams? First off, remember is that no legitimate transaction will require you to pay specifically with gift cards. The Home Depot gift cards purchased in Canada can only be used at The Home Depot Canada stores or on homedepot.ca and cannot be used to purchase other prepaid or specialty gift cards. Government agencies such as the CRA, Service Canada, the RCMP, local police departments, the Treasury Board, or CSIS, will not accept any form of gift cards as payment, and would not ask you for gift card information, especially over the phone.

Secondly, other businesses do not accept payments in the form of The Home Depot gift cards. For example, you should never be asked to pay your utility bills, bail money, or debt collection with The Home Depot gift cards; it’s likely a scam.

Don’t purchase, sell or check your Home Depot gift card balance on online marketplaces outside of The Home Depot stores or homedepot.ca. Websites and emails can be faked— look for outdated company logos or a lack of privacy policy information.

Don’t click or respond to online ads or websites offering free gift cards. These are often scams. Don’t provide personal information over the phone for an unsolicited request and never give gift card numbers over the phone or in an email to a stranger.

If you think you’ve been the victim of a gift card scam, report it to the Fraud Reporting System (Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre) or call toll-free at or the Competition Bureau using the online complaint form.
