Eco-fees are used to support provincial recycling and disposal programs to keep end-of-life products out of our landfills and waterways. These diversion programs help protect our environment and our communities.
Environmental handling fees are used to fund the recovery and recycling of regulated products at the end of their life cycle. These programs help to ensure that products are collected, recycled and disposed of responsibly.
Environmental handling fees support the recovery, transportation, recycling and safe disposal of the impacted products.
Stewardship organizations (provincially approved recycling programs) set the fees each year to cover these recycling programs costs. The Home Depot remits all fees collected from customers to these stewardship organizations.
Yes, if you paid an environmental handling fee when you purchased a product, The Home Depot will refund that fee if you decide to return your purchase.
The products covered by provincial recycling programs vary by province. Click here to find out what products are recyclable in your province and where you can take them for recycling or safe disposal.

The Home Depot Canada offers free battery and cell phone recycling to customers at all The Home Depot Canada stores. Simply drop off your single-use and rechargeable batteries (weighting up to 5 kg each), in the specially marked recycling boxes at the entrance or exit of the store and walk away knowing they will be recycled in an environmentally responsible way. We accept the following types of batteries:
Single-use batteries
Common types: A, AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, and button (coin) cell
Most commonly found in: Flashlights, toys, tools, watches, and household safety devices like fire alarms and CO (Carbon Monoxide) detectors.
What are they?: Also called primary batteries, or dry-cell single-use batteries, these are common household batteries that can’t be recharged and need to be replaced when they lose their charge.
Rechargeable batteries
Common types: Typically include Lithium-Ion, Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride, and Small Sealed Lead Acid* (SSLA).
Most commonly found in: Cordless power tools, cordless phones, and devices like cameras.
What are they?: Also called secondary cell, or storage batteries, rechargeable batteries can, of course, be recharged over and over, but they lose capacity over time. Eventually, they will no longer carry a charge and will need to be replaced, just like their single-use counterparts.
*Note: SSLA batteries are not accepted in Saskatchewan.
